Here’s the outline from last night’s study in 1 John.

How to Know You Know God:

  1. We believe the message John preaches about Jesus (1:3 see 5:13)
  2. We walk in the light (1:6-7)
  3. We admit our sin (1:8-10)
  4. We keep His commandments (2:3)
  5. We don’t live a life defined by sin (3:6)
  6. We love in deed and truth (3:18-19, 4:7)
  7. The Spirit tells us (3:24)

 What Knowing God is:

We don’t always experience these things perfectly in this life, but we do have them, and we are growing in them…

  1. Fellowship with Him (1:3)
  2. Having the truth in You (2:4)
  3. Having the love of God completing its work in you (2:5)
  4. Being in Him (2:5)
  5. Abiding in Him (2:6)
  6. Knowing Him who is from the beginning (2:13)
  7. Knowing the Father (2:13)
  8. Knowing things about Him à ex: that He is Righteous  (2:29)
  9. Knowing the one the world does not know (3:1)
  10. Being totally knowing by Him (3:20)
  11. Having his spirit in you (3:24)
  12. Knowing His spirit (4:2)
  13. Knowing the spirit of truth/being able to discern spiritual truth form error (4:6)
  14. Knowing his love (4:16)
  15. Not being afraid to see him (4:18)
  16. Having the Son (5:12)
  17. Having life (5:12)
  18. Knowing that you have eternal life (5:13)

 Sum Up:

“Relationship” with God, “knowing God”, is being alive to Him spiritually by:

  1. Experiencing him over time, getting to know him like anyone else (1,4,6,7,8,13,14)
  2. Having a “private life” with Him (1,5,9)
  3. Having a new inner environment dominated by him (2,3,11)
  4. Learning a whole new set of facts (8,17)
