I just started reading The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment by Jeremiah Burroughs. It’s a study on how to experience what Paul speaks of in Philippians 4:11 (“I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content”).
So here’s a quote from him, and a question, for today.
The quote: “A little in the world will content a Christian for his passage, but all the world, and ten thousand times more, will not content a Christian for his portion.”
The question: What, do you think, are the two most important words in that quote, and what do they teach us about how to find true contentment?
Comments are open. Let’s hear your thoughts.
I think it’s “passage” and “portion”- and I think being aware that our home is not here is the key- it reminds me of 1 Thessalonians 4 where Paul’s talking about the coming of the Lord and he ends it by writing- “…and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.” (17b-18) That’s our encouragement- that this isn’t all there is- and one day we will always be with the Lord. But while we are here we can be content with whatever the Lord gives us here because this is only temporary and He knows exactly what we need.
